Daycare Photo Journal
August 2008:
The other day, a nice lady called wondering if we only took purebred
dogs. I was momentarily speechless - we always have lots of mixed breed
dogs in our classes, as well as daycare and boarding.
In fact, when I ran the numbers, it turns out that 30% of
all the dogs that come to PDX are of undocumented heritage. Call 'em
mutts, mongrels, Heinz 57s, or my personal favorite, All-Americans, we
know, love, and welcome them here at PDX. Nancy has even done breed
detective consultations where she does her best to guess what breeds
went into the mix, and give advice on what behaviors might be expected
based on looks, movement, and reactions. There are companies that will
give you an analysis of a mixed breed's heritage based on their DNA,
although we were disappointed to hear from one of our customers that the
company he tried was somewhat unsavory: he sent in the requisite $30
along with the cheek swab only to be told that the results were
uncertain and he'd have to pay another $90 to check against more breeds.
Harrumph. But back to the question at hand, we gladly and gratefully
accept all dogs here at PDX: purebred or mixed, big or small,
young or old, smart or unburdened. I will confess that we each seem to
gravitate to certain types: Nancy is famous for her love of the smush-faced
versions, Nancy Cambron and I are partial to the herders, Angie, Brad,
and Be are drawn to terriers, apparently despite themselves. Leanne,
queen of the little dogs, adores the huge lugs, Julie has been typecast
as the Poodle lady. Ashley is often found surrounded by retrievers, both
Labradorian and Golden. Clynton is a sucker for a bully. Chelsea and
Billy are sort of like Switzerland in their neutrality - anything and
everything in between. From the other side, we find that the dogs have
their favorites, and many will select one of us as their personal human.
Who knows what chemistry and quantum energy goes into all these
relations? I'm sure
Patricia
McConnell understands it, but we're happy just to savor the mystery
and enjoy the heck out of all your dogs!
